The mental health challenges that follow military service are distinct in their causes, their presentation, and the barriers that stand in the way of getting help. Combat exposure, moral injury, military sexual trauma (MST), repeated deployments, traumatic brain injury, and the difficulty of civilian reintegration can compound over time — often in ways that don’t surface until years after service ends.
Traditional treatment settings rarely understand military culture: the language, the hierarchy, the stigma around mental health, or the specific ways that trauma from service shows up differently than civilian trauma. Our program is built by clinicians with military and veteran training specifically to close that gap.
Service members and veterans who come to our program are seen by clinicians who understand their background, respected as individuals with expertise in navigating difficulty, and connected with care that is structured enough to be effective without requiring them to step away from work, family, or daily obligations.
Our program is built to provide:

Many veterans navigating mental health treatment also need practical support — case coordination, physical wellness, stable housing during treatment, and help connecting with VA and community resources. Our integrated model addresses these alongside clinical care.

Veterans often arrive with more than one clinical need. Our program works alongside our other specialized tracks, including:
Our Military & Veterans Program is available across all outpatient levels of care.
The right starting point is determined through an individual clinical assessment — most people enter at PHP or IOP and step down as they stabilize.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) A structured, intensive track for individuals who need significant clinical support but do not require 24-hour inpatient care. PHP typically runs five days per week and provides the highest level of outpatient structure — appropriate for those stepping down from residential care or navigating acute mental health needs.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) A flexible but rigorous option for individuals who are stable enough to manage daily responsibilities while receiving clinical treatment several days per week. Morning, afternoon, and evening scheduling options are available in the mental health track to accommodate work and family schedules.
Outpatient Program (OP) A lower-frequency continuation option for individuals transitioning from PHP or IOP who need ongoing clinical support while building independence. OP provides continuity without the intensity of earlier levels of care.
San Diego Transformation Center accepts most major insurance plans and works with veterans and service members to understand their coverage options before beginning treatment.
Getting started is often the hardest part. Here is what the process looks like from first contact to beginning treatment:
Joint Commission Accreditation San Diego Transformation Center received Joint Commission Behavioral Health Care accreditation in early 2026 — the national standard for safety and quality in behavioral health treatment. This is the same accreditation standard the VA uses to evaluate community care providers.
Culturally Competent Military Care Our clinical team is trained in military culture, service-related trauma, and the unique barriers veterans face in seeking and staying in treatment. This isn’t a general mental health program with a veterans module — it is a program built to understand and work within the realities of military and post-service life.
All Levels of Outpatient Care in One Program PHP, IOP, and OP are all available within the Military & Veterans track, meaning clients do not need to transfer to a new program or clinical team as they step down through levels of care. Continuity of care within a familiar team is a meaningful differentiator.
Flexible Scheduling Morning, afternoon, and evening scheduling options are available in the mental health IOP track — an important consideration for veterans balancing treatment with employment, family responsibilities, or VA appointments.

Do I need a VA referral to receive treatment at San Diego Transformation Center? Depending on your benefits and coverage type, a referral may or may not be required. Veterans using VA Community Care Network (CCN) benefits typically do need a referral, while those with TRICARE or private insurance may be able to access care directly. Our admissions team can help clarify what your specific benefits require and whether a referral is needed before intake. [Verify VA CCN partnership status before publishing.]
What types of trauma does the Military & Veterans Program address? The program addresses combat-related PTSD, military sexual trauma (MST), moral injury, traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related mental health concerns, reintegration stress, and co-occurring depression, anxiety, or substance use tied to service-related experiences. Treatment is individualized — the specific modalities used depend on the clinical assessment.
Does the program accept TRICARE insurance? San Diego Transformation Center accepts most major insurance plans and works with veterans and service members to verify benefits before beginning treatment. Contact our admissions team or submit the insurance verification form to confirm your specific TRICARE plan and coverage level. [Confirm TRICARE billing status before publishing.]
Can I bring a family member to treatment? Family involvement is a structured part of the Military & Veterans Program. Family therapy, education groups, and supportive services are available for spouses, partners, children, and other family members. Contact our team to discuss how family can be involved in your treatment plan.
What is the difference between PHP and IOP for veterans? Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most intensive outpatient level — typically running five days per week for several hours per day — suited for individuals with more acute needs or those stepping down from residential or inpatient care. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is less intensive and typically meets three to five days per week, allowing individuals to maintain more of their daily routine while receiving structured clinical care. A clinical assessment at intake determines the appropriate starting point.
Does the program address substance use along with mental health? Yes. Integrated dual diagnosis care — simultaneous treatment for mental health conditions, trauma, and substance use disorders — is a core feature of the Military & Veterans Program. Veterans with co-occurring depression and alcohol use, PTSD and cannabis use, or other combinations are treated within a unified care model rather than being routed to separate programs.
Is the program confidential? Will my military record or employer be notified? Treatment at San Diego Transformation Center is confidential. We do not contact employers, military commands, or other parties without written consent. Federal and state privacy protections (including HIPAA) apply. If you have specific questions about confidentiality related to your service status or employment, speak with our admissions or clinical team directly before beginning treatment.
